Me again - 2000 Saab 9-3 engine light came on - after I changed the Air filter 2018. Hmm reset the Engine management fault codes by removing the fuses almost weekly. 2nd car & small mileage but irritating! Came back. Replaced the Mass Air sensor £95 & postage to Portugal but but worth it eh? Nope came back. Checked elec connections & changed oil breather pipes - no - came back. Last week - new spark plugs (over 4 years old - duh) - sorted!
You're right again Scotty!
I must follow advice - keep it up & thanks again. Andy

Glad you got it sorted out. Worn spark plugs are hard on the DIC (Direct Ignition Cassette) as well. It is all too easy to get ahead of yourself when diagnosing a problem and forgetting the simplest things!
Yep always start with the simple stuff
4 year old spark plugs caused your problem? I was under the impression that iridium and platinum plugs lasted a whole lot longer than that.
they do last, if the rest of the engine is in good shape. But there are factors which can make them wear faster.
Saab engines with direct ignition and Trionic engine control system are very sensitive to spark plug type and condition. In fact one should not use anything but the original type NGK plugs because they are used as knock sensors, measuring ionization in the cylinders. The wrong type of plug or very worn plugs can even damage the ignition cassette. Factory recommendation is to change the plugs every 30K miles.
