Two Toyotas

Thoughts on purchasing a 2016 Toyota Camry SE (57,000 miles) and 2006 4Runner (158,000 miles).  Camry has the 4 cyl, 6 speed transmission, 4Runner an 8 (unk trans).  Both appear to be in great shape, one for daughter, the other for me.  Both have just one previous owner.  Thanks!

Both of those are solid cars, especially the 4Runner. That 4.7L V8 is the same one Toyota used in the Land Cruiser at the time, so it's extremely durable. It does use a rubber timing belt, so check to see if that has been changed - if it has not, you would want to address that right away. Those 4Runners are built like tanks and can easily go 250K+ miles. The Camry is a good choice for reliability/dependability. They don't have any known problems per se, as long as they were taken care of. Have both of those thoroughly checked out by a trusted mechanic before you move forward to make sure they're solid.

Thanks for the response.  Nothing in the CarFax report indicates the timing belt was replaced on the 4Runner, however, based on the condition of the vehicle and the appearance it was well taken care of, I might roll the dice and purchase it anyway with the expectation of having it done.  I believe it'll be worth the cost.

Try checking under the hood. If the timing belt was replaced, there should be a sticker with the date and mileage of the replacement. You can certainly buy the car and then have the timing belt replaced since it is an interference engine - it will definitely be worth the cost. Hope you enjoy that 4Runner!

Thank you!

If they are both clean titles and can pass a mechanical inspection, both are solid choices.

Thank you. Had to pass up on the Camry. Vehicle was in good condition, however, the interior had a weird funky smell. {black}:vomited: Thought I was in a Seinfeld episode! I'll be looking at another one later tonight.

That's because the owner didn't change the cabin filter. Cabin filters are pretty much cheap.

Yep. Dealership said they did that, but this funk smell was in the upholstery, headliner, everywhere. Too much for me to tolerate.

Interesting. I completely get it though. As someone with allergies I'm sensitive to those kinds of things.
