Help Scotty, I have a 1998 F150 with a 5.4 V8 with 307,000 miles. After start up I have an annoying ticking or typewriter sound that continues until it has warmed up and then typically goes away. Look at this possibly be? I’m worried it might be valves or something?
My bet would be the lifters. They are not that hard to replace.
any way to find out for sure?
Could be failing hydraulic lifters. Are they original? Also, maybe a small exhaust manifold leak that seals up when the cast iron manifold heats up, expands and seals.
Everything is original internal engine wise
I'm going to have to side with @Doc on this one. All original parts, 300k+ on that motor....lifters would be where my money is.
Oddly enough I started it this morning and drove to work without any ticking
did some research on the lifters and it’s making more sense now honestly. What beats me is how random it can be. Sometimes I hear it with acceleration or letting off sometimes after start up or not and it’ll come and go. Just crazy
