Used Camry that came with the wrong engine!

Hi Scotty,

I bought a used 2001 Toyota Camry (automatic) with 58K miles in 2016 for 7k and it ran great for approximately 6 years.  After hitting about 123k miles a year ago I started getting P0171 codes.  I would take it in to the local toyota dealer and they would charge me about 1k to fix or replace this or that sensor.  I also had a coil job done in the last 6 months.  Recently, after the 4th p0171 code I was told I had the engine of a 98 camry under my hood (I never knew this!) and that the computer could not communicate properly with the engine.  They kept my car for a month and put lots of unbilled hours into the project but ultimately gave up.  The engine light comes on now from time to time, the car seems to drive normally. My question is, how should I regard this car, just as a beater or should I try to fix it.  Also, shouldn't the dealership in Sacramento CA have to disclose that the engine had been replaced?  Feeling sad, I love this car. Thank you Scotty, you do a great service wonderfully.  E

Truthfully, I'd keep it as a beater because there's too many changes from year to year to let it mesh with all the software and wiring and sensors
