I just ordered a 26 Camry Hybrid and people are telling me to get a preheater for this cold weather. Is this really necessary?

What people are telling you that? How cold is your weather?

It's very necessary if you live in Alaska

Until I bought my '14 F-150, I had no clue block heaters for gas cars were a thing. I thought block heaters were geared toward diesel engines, because they rely on compression-ignition, not spark plugs. Freezing weather causes compression-ignition engines to not start reliably when not equipped with a block heater.

  • My truck was delivered to Toronto, Canada and it came with a block heater. I live in southwestern Ohio. I've not used the block heater, as temperatures almost never dip below -15⁰F where I live. We average around 20⁰F for lows and in the mid-30⁰F range for highs this tome of year. Right now, it's near 0⁰F, and I don't have the block heater plugged in. There isn't a convenient place to plug it in. If it gets into the negatives routinely, get a block heater. If it doesn't get seriously cold, you probably don't need it.
