2013 Chevy Cruze RT 64,000mi
Though the manual specifies the GM-specific products for oil changes, ie Prestone, etc, and coolant for the vehicle, can Valvoline be considered a safe alternative? Or is it always better to only use what the manufacturer recommends? I'd really like to stop relying on the $dealership.

The brand name of a product is meaningless. Use whatever satisfies the manufacturer's recommendation and whatever is on sale. They are all pretty much from the same place anyway, ie, oil, coolant, gasoline, etc.
