I have a 2005 Toyota 4Runner automatic transmission with 212,201 miles on it. The head was rebuilt at 205,000 miles and now there is a weird sound coming from the engine. What could it be? I will attach a video with audio.

Please let me know if audio is not clear enough, I did my best but will try again if I need to.

We need more details. What kind of sound am I listening for in the video? has the car been acting weird?

Sorry audio isn’t the best… But to answer your question, no the car has been running great!! I just don’t want to ignore the sound because it definitely is not normal. It is a hard noise to explain but it is almost like a ticking/rattling before accelerating, then it goes away when I am driving 10+ mph. I’m no car expert at all, but my first guess would be motor mounts. I should probably take it in to the shop but wanted to check here for any insights before I did that.

Just wanted to get back to you guys about this. I brought it in to my trusty mechanic and it was just the alternator going bad😅. Thanks for y’all’s insight and help!

Yes sound is too low for me to hear anything my advice would be open the hood to have somebody grab the engine up see if it makes a noise then and make a video with the audio turned up higher

I will do that! Thanks for the response!

Has the timing chain, guides and tensioner ever been replaced?  They usually need replacement after about 150K miles.

No the timing chain guides or tensioner have never been replaced. I will make sure that gets done. Thanks for the input!!

I drive a 2005 Tacoma, same motor.  Its hard to hear but I think Doc is right, tensioner pulley and guides.

Mine had to be replaced at 160K miles

I’ll take it in and make sure that gets done! Thanks for the input!!
