Scotty, I own a 2007 Honda Civic Hybrid, automatic, approximately 220,000 miles on it. Has been an excellent little car. I do a lot of the maintenance myself. On a occasion the aforementioned civic shakes/shutters when accelerating? I found the following thread with a possible reason why.

question from “mechanic.”

Hi my name is ** ** you ever done a deburnish on the start/stop clutches?

his explanation for how to do the aforementioned process.

“Its a very well know issue with the hybrids, what happens is the clutches on the start stop motor get gunked up and this causes a serious shudder under acceleration. What you need to do is get 12 quarts of honda cvt fluid and drain all the fluid out, Put 4 quarts of fluid in then put in drive with foot on brake bring rpms to 4000 and hold for 15 secs. then do the same in reverse. Take car out and drive for 15 seconds through each gear manually 1,2,3, d etc etc, Drain fluid again and refill and repeat again then drain fluid and add correct fluid to level marks.”

Well if done correctly yes that can help those poorly made transmissions to some extent. But the problem is if they have a reason about a mileage on it not only will it not help it can often make them slip like mad after the process is done.Trying to Band-Aid a failing CVT transmission is really not smart thing to do.
