Dear Scotty,

For the past year my car has been making a clinking sound that nobody can seem to identify. Can you help?

Watch this quick video to hear and see the situation.

  • 2012 Nissan Maxima, 73000 miles, AT, new brake pads last year, disassembled checked and reassembled front struts and springs. No loose links, or arms on suspension, sprayed lubrication on every pivot point, bushing I can see.

PLEASE HELP!

Sounds like it is happening when you are braking... did it happen at the same time? Maybe something on the calipers?

Yes, there is more of a "clunking" when braking forward, and the louder "clinking" when braking in reverse. I have removed cleaned and relubricated the brake pads, rotors, calipers, and brake pins multiple times. But never seem to make a difference.

something is loose.

Jack up the vehicle and spin the wheels by hand and have someone operate the brakes.

Ok I will try that this weekend!

Ok I did jack up the car, spun the wheel and had someone hit the brakes. I could not duplicate or even hear a sound.

What else could this be? What can shift or "clunk" when braking and changing direction?

worn suspension. See Scotty's video about finding sounds in the FAQ

One time I had clicking sounds on my 2012 Accord, not this loud though and only 2-3 times when starting to drive.  After trying different things I finally removed brake pad caliper springs / clips and all clicking stopped.
