How do I remove rusty wheels

Hi, I have a more general question.

What do you use to remove wheels that are rusted/corroded to the hub. I know you can kick it but that doesn't always work and using a sledgehammer runs the risk of damaging the rim.

Also to the mechanics if there was a wheel puller tool that worked well without damaging the rim would it be worth buying?

Thanks

My grandfather told me a trick that you could loosen all the nuts and then put them on hand tight and then drive around slowly and the weight of the car should break them off

This is what I was thinking. I’ve never seen it done, and sounds fraught with peril (like damaging the stud threads), but people have claimed it works.

usually you only need to creep forward a couple of feet so there's no danger.
You cannot damage threads because the wheel studs do not support the vehicle, they just keep the wheel from coming off. The hub is what bears the weight (provided you don't loosen the nuts so much the wheel slips off which seems pretty unlikely)

This is why I also do my final wheel nut torquing after going around the block.

Well what you can start out with is get a 2x4 piece of wood. Put it on the inside of the wheel with the car jacked up and the lug nuts taken off. Then whack the heck out of the 2x4 with a sledgehammer. That almost always works, but if not and you can find a pullet that will fit on your wheel go right ahead. The only problem is there's so many different size wheels and some of them won't have a big enough opening to put a pull around
