When buying a Used car is there any way to know whether the odometer reads the REAL mileage

A friend is looking into buying a used car.  Is there any way to know whether the odometer mileage is accurate.

I thought I read a good scan tool can check the actual mileage but am not sure whether this is true or not.

Please help.

Yes and No. No, because criminals are always finding new and inventive ways to hack into any system to change car odometer readings. Yes, and surprisingly, A CarFax report can flag any significant odometer issues. Receipts and paperwork can help, but not always because most people don't do car maintenance anyway, and if they do, who keeps receipts ? LOL

IDK if a scan cool can check this, but my screening for a used car is to ask if they have repair and maintenance receipts. They show what has been fixed and what maintenance has been done. And, perhaps more important, people who keep receipts are a whole different kind of person - not any better or worse in other respects, but they DO get their maintenance done, and aren't BSing you about getting that timing belt done.
