Hello Scotty,
I have watched a number of your videos but I am not clear on something. I have heard you say NOT to buy used cars from CarMax, as an example, but what I want to know is where do you suggest I should look to buy a used car? I am in Los Angeles, so do you suggests I go to used car dealers, or Craigs List or the Sunday Los Angeles Times in the personal adds or where specifically should I be looking for a used car? If I missed a video regarding this specific question let me apologize in advance. I am interested in purchasing a 2019 Genesis G80 and again I am in Los Angeles. Thank you Scotty!! I just love all of the information you give. Thank you for all of your work!!
I would worry more about the condition of the car itself and get it inspected before purchase than the location of purchase.
When it comes to small car lots look at BBB and Google reviews and use good judgment. Don't buy one at auction. Large car lots like Carmax are fine as long as you're not overpaying and you are getting the car inspected.
CarMax is fine, just in general they cost more than dealership vehicles, but at least you can see them in person and test drive them unlike Carvana and Vroom. And CarMax seems to have better cars than Carvana and Vroom (in terms of selection and quality; this is annecdotal evidence so take that for what it’s worth). You can also still look at Craigslist or used car dealerships, but no matter where you look always have an independent, honest mechanic check out the vehicle thoroughly before you buy. I know CarMax gives you up to 7 days to return the vehicle which is nice, no questions asked (and of course you can’t exceed a certain mileage limit which is pretty high anyways for 7 days, so no worries there), but you do pay a premium (in general) for CarMax. That was Scotty’s main point. But I have seen some decent deals on CarMax (no worse than dealer’s anyways), too.
BTW, I would not purchase a Genesis G80 especially if you intend to keep for a long time. The originally powertrain warranty (10 year/100,000 miles) only applies to the original owner, and their quality since 2010 has been poor (hit or miss). We currently are not recommending any Hyundai Motor Group products; please see below:
