VW Golf R or GTI

Hey Scotty, (2 questions)

I know you're not crazy about Volkswagen, but I'm curious...Is the Golf R better made/engineered, more reliable and a better buy than the Golf GTI, which is primarily assembled in Mexico? Is one better than the other?

...2) if a sports car doesn't have direct AND port injection, isn't it a risk in buying that car? If it just has direct injection, won't a potential buyer risk major carbon issues down the road that will cost a a pretty penny to fix? Should one ever buy a sports car with JUST direct injection??

Thanks!

DI + PI is better

Those are money pit machines.

DI+PI is okay.

PI alone is best.

DI alone is junk.

The GTI and R both have the same engine, but the R has more horsepower and is AWD. Both are made in Mexico. Both are direct injection. These Volkswagen engines are very well-known for carbon build-up, and you need to get them walnut blasted every 50,000 miles. They are decent cars, but they require frequent maintenance to keep them from going bad. I'd say the DSG transmission is the money pit on those cars. My friend had a 2016 GTI and the DSG transmission already started going out at 60,000 miles! Most people prefer getting the manual versions.

Direct injection is really great in my opinion. The only downside with it is potential carbon build-up on the intake valves. If you're willing and able to get it cleaned every 50,000 miles then go ahead and get a sports car with direct injection.
