I was looking into buying a 4runner and was wondering what years were the best to buy?
I don’t know of the top of my head. Usually, the further out from a generational launch. Year one or two maybe avoid. But subsequent years should be better. 2014-2024 would probably be a good range to look into, assuming they were maintained and not abused. Maybe as far back as 2011 too.
If you mean 5th gen, they are all solid, but 2021 seemed to have some more complaints, like failing paint. Maybe a side effect of covid or something.
1st gen were solid, but terribly under-powered, but could get the job done. They were just a truck with cab and seat in back added basically.
2nd gen had a much nicer body, and the 4 cylinder did fine, but again weak. The 3.0 (3.slow) V6 blew head gaskets every 70k or so, but could go a long time besides that.
Remember, there are countries that still use these things daily, terrorists especially like their dependability for raids.
3rd gen 1996-2002 got everything right for the most part. Solid engine choice, though the 4 cylinder was pretty weak. I liked the 3.4 in my 98 just fine, it wasn't a race car though. All years were very good, 98 worked out a few small issues from then on.
4th gen from 2003-2009 were all solid. Great 4.0 engine and A750 trans that is still being used in the newest 4Runner, that tells you something. The 4th gens were less truck like ride, and more comfortable, but it could still go off road quite well. It also offered the terrific 4.7 V8 that was only slightly worse in MPG, they tweaked the V8 by 2005 I think it was.
5th gen 2010-present went more truck like, but not so much as the 3rd gen.
If you want a 5th gen, I suggest you rent one, and take it on a multi day trip and see how you like it. Some complain that it isn't as comfortable, and just doesn't drive that well. Mechanically they are fine, and plenty loved by their owners.
