Whirring sound of engine

Hi Scotty,

I have a 2010 Toyota Corolla with 150kms, automatic transmission.  I noticed a 'whirring' sound that has been getting worse over the last 2 years.  Does not get faster if I step on the accelerator in park.  The engine sound is separate and sounds normal compared to this other sound that is intermittent.  What could this be related to?  The mechanic said that the belts looked okay.

Can you make a YouTube video of the noise & post the link here?

I've noticed my (09 Matrix) fuel pump having a louder whir - intermittent, not speed related.

will check into this...thanks

You can tell by the noise it makes when you start the engine before you move - the fuel pump has to run to get the fuel up to pressure, then will switch on periodically. If that's the noise you're hearing, that's it.If you're hearing something else ( loose heat shields can make strange, sporadic noises.)

Sounds like the bearing in the idler pulley is going out.

thanks for the info...
