Whoop sound

I have a 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland Summit. It has over 266K at this time. A few years ago we started hearing a whoop sound and it turned out to be the transmission. We had it replaced with a used one and that was about 4 years ago. Today, I hear that same whoop sound again and I am not sure if we can stand another transmission replacement based on the current mileage and costs involved. What would you recommend in this instance?

I should add that we are not in a financial position to purchase a new vehicle at this time but are just trying to gauge our next move.

My wife has a 2013 GC.  I think I know the sound you’re talking about. It’s a very distinctive, intermittent woop sound with a rising pitch that lasts a second or 2?

I don’t recall what it was, but I don’t think it was a transmission problem (maybe it was). I’ll go back over our service records and see if I can find the details of the fix.

But I don’t think it was a fatal problem and it’s ok to drive for now.  At that high miles, you’re probably just better off anyway to drive it til it dies and save your money for a down payment on a replacement.

Probably the thing to do first is have a transmission expert diagnose the problem to see if it really is the transmission wearing out. (If you post a link to a video demonstrating the noise maybe someone here would have an idea of possible alternate causes.)

Assuming it is the transmission and you're not in a position to repair or replace the vehicle about all you can do is drive it until it drops, putting money aside for something else in the meantime.

I will try to get a video and see if that helps. The sound starts low and the pitch goes up which creates this long whoooOOOOOOP sound.
As I noted, this actually happened to the original transmission about 5 years ago. At that time, we had around 150K miles. Now with the rebuilt trans, we are over 265K miles. That repair costs over 4K. Cannot do that again.
