Why aren’t newer half ton trucks reliable anymore?

From what I heard, it seems that most late model light duty pickup trucks from American manufacturers have a poor reputation for reliability but when it comes to heavy duty trucks, they’re better built for some reason. Then, Toyota Tundra  with twin turbo V6 engines are blowing up even if they decided to replace all the engines, it’s still unproven and of course only time will tell but I don’t think it would last long as tried and true V8.

At least part of the reason is manufacturers have to put most of their development capital and engineering into compliance with insane government regulations rather than product quality. You could roll back the requirements 20 years and everything would still be fine, but most politicians and bureaucrats do not understand or even recognize the concept of diminishing returns.

@chucktobias do you think that might change under current leadership?

@imperator - It might, but vehicle manufacturers have to look at the long term for product planning. Current leadership may tame some of the madness but it is unclear whether that momentum will be maintained in future elections.

@chucktobias I'm not so convinced that looking long term is part of their vocabulary 😆. They might try cashing in while getting is good.
