Why does 2005 MGM jerk when shifting gear (On quick start ups)

Hi all,

My 2005 MGM (about 121K miles) jerks when I shift into gear upon start-up, but it only happens when I first get into the car & haven't used it in 2-3 days. After that initial jerk, it drives smooth and doesn't jerk afterwards.

The first time it happened, I started to let the car idle for about 2-3 minutes before taking off and the jerking was very minor (barely noticeable) or non-existent

What is causing this & is it something I should be worried about?

Best Regards,

Lofi

you mean when the engine is cold and in open loop right? The engine is still idling high (>1000RPM) so the torque converter absorbs more momentum.  If it drives ok you don't need to be worried, but make sure you are maintaining the transmission properly.

Is the idle speed higher when this happens?

The idle speed is high upon start up and sits around 1200 rpms for 3-5 seconds. After that it sits at about 900

That's why you get an initial jerk when putting the trans into gear after starting the engine from cold, you're on fast idle. Restarting the engine when it's warm the fast idle is not engaged.
