Why is my oil still dirty after an oil change??

Hi Scotty. I have a 2018 Hyundai Sonata SEL 4cyl that I bought brand new in Dec 2018. The first time I changed the oil, I noticed that it was still dirty. I've learned that after it drains, I have to run clean oil through the engine to clean out any residue left behind.  I pour about 1/2 quart of oil through twice until it is clean. It now has only 9,500 miles on it after owning it for 2 years.  I have used Quaker State, Castrol Edge, and Costco Kirkland brand oils with 5W-20 and 5W-30; I have tried full synthetic, synthetic blend, regular oil, and regular high mileage oil.  I have never had my car serviced at any mechanic.  Other than the oily residue problem, it runs great.

Just drain it, and refill it with the manufacturer recommended viscosity.
Forget all the other stuff your doing, it’s ridiculous.

Engine oil will turn darker in the presence of oxygen. A brand new freshly sealed bottle of oil will be a nice clear yellow but if you leave half a bottle out over a week it will turn darker like molasses. This dosen't really affect the lubricating and cooling properties of the oil though, there's nothing to worry about. Good on you to change your own oil, though you should keep to using the type recommended by your manufacturer for your temperate region. Variable valve timing has come a long way in the past 10 years, almost all cars have some form of it, and it is reliant on your specified oil type to work properly.

@itaintright
Here is what Hyundai recommends: API Service SM*3 or above / ILSAC GF-4 or above /ACEA A5 or above.

And of course, Quaker State is the brand name they recommend. All my oil changes have meet and exceeded this recommendations. My other cars (Nissan and Toyota) do not have this residue problem when I check the dipstick after an oil change.....only this one.

Maybe the tip of the dipstick sits on top of a baffle plate in the oil pan. There's not much you could do in that case besides getting an aftermarket oil pan and dipstick. It's just one of those anal things that you'll have to try not to think about.

The oil should be dirty. That means it is doing its job. You want the dirt in the oil, not in the engine.

@mountainmanjoe
It is in the engine. That is why I have to flush it with clean oil before I seal the drain plug and fill it with 5 qts of oil.

then change it again

@mountainmanjoe
That would obviously solve the problem, but why is this happening with this particular car. You would expect 5 quarts of clean oil to be clean once the dirty oil is emptied, but without flushing it, the dipstick will show brown oil.

maybe some dirty oil gets stuck up in the oil dipstick tube.

A little bit of residue isn't going to hurt anything. You are changing the filter right?

@mountainmanjoe
Yes, the filter gets changed too. I pull out the dipstick and wipe off the oil the first time so I don't get a false level reading. The second time, I put in the dipstick and check it. The level is good, but the color will be brown. Even after driving it, the next day it is still brown.

next time post a photo of what the oil looks like. Dirty is a subjective word.
