| Who did the "full diagnostic scan" and where was it done? Something upstream of the CAT is causing the p0420 code, usually oil burning or an overly rich mixture. I would find an alternate, qualified independent mechanic to use a high end scanner to check for codes and go from there. | |||||

| Hey Scotty I have this 2009 Subaru forester 2.5 X premium. It has 193,000. the check engine light is on, i looked at my scanner and it said p0420(1/1) Stored Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1) Severity 2 of 3 Freeze Frame//// ( note the check engine light only comes on when I am going a certain speed) what do you think I should look for? | |||||

| ... min where I had to idle on my way home. After we got going again I dropped back down into overdrive and just as I had done that codes tripped. I made it to the nearest O'Reilly's (who uses a sucky OBDII scanner) and p0420/Bank 1 came up once and P0430/Bank 2 came up twice over the 15 miles it took to get to O'Reilly's. I don't know my 1st bank from my 2nd but what I can tell you is I put on a new (Amazon) Cat Labor Day weekend on the front side and it nas ran with no problems until now. | No. Again, please read "how to fix p0420" in the FAQ. Then diagnose the problem. Use your scan tool to see if in fact it is bad. On a 20 year old vehicle it's not out of the question. | |||||

| ... light in engine warning light. Tested the vehicle and vehicle read p0420 bank 1. The other code was for a bad oil pressure sensor. I replace the oil pressure sensor and from invoice from others left the catalytic converter sensor issue alone for over a year. | Hello big fan of your videos here. I've got a 2002 Honda Civic 1.7L that's tripping the p0420 code which is a bad catalytic converter code. I recently replaced my top dead center sensor. Could that sensor being bad and causing extreme heat to the exhaust manifold cause this code to be tripped because of the heat generated from that bad sensor in turn burning up my cat? | |||||

| I recently changed the battery less than a month ago, I’ll have the alternator tested, I’ve had the car for 70k miles don’t know how the previous owner did or didn’t do maintenance my guess is he didn’t do good of a job. But I have done the maintenance on time kind of weird though if it’s a p0420 code the car as of now still runs perfectly fine. | |||||

| What's good everyone. So me being the owner of my mommas Jeep I decided to have the check engine light diagnosed with a scan tool as its been on for 6 years and code p0420 came up but there's no symptoms tho? | ... just like the one from the video but I recently fixed a bad ignition coil, and now I got a p0420 code I erased the code twice but when I turn the AC on the check engine comes back on I also tested the oxygen sensor in front when you open the hood and the one under the car with a multimeter and it does show resistance,I can see one more back by the catalytic converter or towards the back of the car but I couldn’t test that one didn’t find a way to disconnect it. | 2011 Traverse 203000km Lone p0420 code. Engine runs at 12 to 15% at idle. Ltft normalizes off idle. No vaccuum leaks found. Fuel injector/system cleaners used to no avail. Stft oscillate between -3 to -7 on idle. A few weeks ago when temperatures were above 18C, ltft were 5 to 9 per cent. When it got cold (4 C), that's when the ltfts were at 12 to 15% I replaced the purge valve solenoid, pcv valves, a pcv valve hose that had a bad o ring. I recently cleaned the throttle body and maf sensor. TB gasket replaced. LTFT values didn't get better. Oxygen sens ... | |||||

| It's unlikely for a catalytic converter to go bad after only 94k (unless the vehicle had serious engine problems in its lifetime). I would suspect malfunctioning O2 sensors. They need to be diagnosed properly using live data from a scan tool. (I think the MAF sensor is barking up the wrong tree) More p0420 info in our Frequently Asked Questions on the main page. | |||||

| I have a 2006 Toyota Matrix 4WD with 94000 miles. About 9 months ago, the check engine light came on. I took it to auto zone to get the code read, and it came back with p0420. I took the car to my mechanic (who replaced the exhausts system from the manifold back, including cat, about 2 years ago), and they tried cleaning the mass air flow sensor, and cleared the code.
