| Low MAF, tail pipe soot, odd Fuel Trim readings - 2008 Camry LE (2AZ-FE) | 16Relevance | 6 years ago | geriscan | Submit Your Question HERE | |
| There's discernible soot collecting on the tail pipe of this 2AZ-FE, 2008 Camry LE. I have a blue Driver OBD Scan Tool I'm using for raw data collection. Live data shows a reasonable short-term trim number (3.x), most of the time, long-term trim is hovering around 8. When I rev up to 2000 rpm for a minute, the short term trim goes down to near zero, but the long term trim rises to roughly 12. (Parenthetically, there's no P0102 code, no DTC at this time). Additionally, my blue Driver scan tool registers the MAF at a very low 0.3, and the same sixty-second rev up to 2K rpm makes little difference in that grams per second number. As cleaning the MAF (which I did, last week), I've followed standard instructions, using the CRC-specific cleaner for MAF sensors. The wires look clean, at least without the use of a magnifier lens. The only other recent maintenance in this area is that I cleaned the throttle body with some CRC throttle cleaner. (There was plenty to decarbonate). Subsequently, I've checked to see if the hoses and clamps were reinstalled firmly in place, where the K&N cold air intake connects to these hoses. The K&N air filter is relatively new and clean. Given all of this, I suspect that the MAF may have malfunctioned (although I have not tested it with a multi-meter). I'm thinking about doing an inexpensive, used OEM swap: There's a salvage yard with a few Generation Six Camry's available. I thought to harvest one and make that switch. If upon installing the salvage unit, the readings go up to 2 gms or so (assuming that the salvage yard pickup is functional, which is always a wild-card variable), then I'll know that the original MAF "died." (I can always multi-meter test both, salvage and original, as well). So, these are two issues I'm having currently, with my thirteen year old Camry. My tentative assumption is that they are related. Any advice or thoughts, based on your experience and expertise, would be appreciated. Be Safe. Be Well. | |||||

| The most direct way to check for engine sludge is to remove the valve cover and look. This is easy on most inline 4-cylinder engines but a pain on Subaru boxer engines. You would need to find a good independent mechanic in your area to do a thorough diagnosis. Dealers and chain shops should be avoided. There are tips for finding a good mechanic in the site FAQ. I personally am not a professional mechanic and only work on my own vehicles and, occasionally, family and friends' cars. Scotty is currently in Portsmouth, Rhode Island so if you are within reasonable driving distance you can contact him to make an appointment. (Instructions are in the aforementioned FAQ.) Alternatively, Scotty will be returning to Clarksville Tennessee late in July if you are near that location. | |||||
| 5.7 Hemi V8 puff of blue smoke out of tailpipe on cold start | 15Relevance | 3 years ago | kcarguy | Submit Your Question HERE | |
| Hey Scotty, I have a 2019 RAM 1500 Classic with the 5.7L Hemi V8 with 68,000 Miles. It has recently gotten very cold outside and I noticed upon cold start there was a puff of blue smoke out of the tailpipe for a second or so when the truck first started then went away. This has never happened before I was thinking this is possibly a sign on the piston rings starting to wear. What are your thoughts/suggestions on what could be causing this? Thanks. Kevin | |||||

| The blue smoke indicates burning oil. Try changing your PCV valve to see if it helps. Otherwise, it's the valve stem seals or the piston rings or both. | |||||

| A Texas blue title means the title is clear and has no problems. If it does have a problem it will say rebuilt title or reconditioned title which means it was totaled by an insurance company | |||||

| Hello chief so after overhauling my 2GR-4wheel drive engine with the blue smoke still coming out so I decided to changed the oil first. I flushed the vascoline synthetic 5w30 oil recommended for the car out, & I had to use a mobil oil xhp 20w- 50 for the car with and ambro oil treatment-(stop smoke)and all of a sudden the car stops smoking but when I start the car at a cold start there’s no smoke but after a long ride like 4-5hours with heavy sun light heating the car & the engine is really hot the smoke comes back very little grey from the exhaust what do u think chief I checked the oil gauge but it doesn’t really look like it’s going down every morning I check !!! My mechanic is miles away from me and I have to travel back to meet him ... | |||||

| Hey guys, I just got a 2008 Toyota Highlander with 100000 miles on it and after 3months I started to hear a rattling sound at cold start after 2seconds it goes back to normal and the engine shorts oil, there’s no drop of oil on the ground & it runs smooth the rattling sound comes out from the passenger side of the engine close to the timing area. I really want this fixed cos there are not too good mechanics in my area and am scared of giving it to them because it seems it’s quite expensive to fix. And I noticed a small blue smoke at the start up on cold start too and after that it goes back to normal I have used a bar leak rear main seal oil it stopped then after some months now it’s back, I was recommended to use a Lucas engine oil stop leak buh before that I wanna know what’s wrong please help me | |||||
| A little blue smoke | 15Relevance | 5 years ago | tlcarlton | Submit Your Question HERE | |
| I have a 2012 Mustang GT/6 speed automatic with 39K miles that will send a little blue smoke out of the exhaust for a few seconds under hard acceleration, something that I don't do often. There are no trouble codes and nothing indicating a problem when my mechanic runs a live scan. There are no leaks or seepage that my mechanic can find and I'm not losing a noticeable amount of oil on my weekly check. My research leads me to believe that the valve stem seals need replacing. My mechanic seems to agree but does not think that it's something that constitutes an emergency but should be done in the near future. I'd like your take on the matter. I've been watching your videos for quite a while now and your opinion holds a lot of weight. Thanks in advance. | |||||

| 10/11/21- hi scotty thank you in advance for this help. I have wheelchair car with 62,00 miles, toyota scionxb 2006. I took it in for the 65,00 mile check which included the change of transmission and engine oil as well as check the liquids. Initially when I go to run the car the temperature light is blue after it warms up. All was well. Now, after driving for a bit, the temperatue light turns red and the car brake light turns on. the car just will stop on its tracks. I saw your video about head gasket, radiator, etc. There is no smell, Leak on from the car either. I am worried. before I bring it into toyota again, pelase advise. I would hate to be stranded especially being wheelchair. I am most concerned that I may get taken advantage of. Replacement of radiator, perhaps. | |||||

| Dear Scotty, i own a 2003 ford ranger (blue) with 170k miles & manual transmission. It has a possible issue whenever im braking- just before the vehicle fully stops. The issue is while im braking, the pedal feels like ABS is on but the ABS light does not display and this happens in all and any road conditions. The truck also moves slightly to the right when this happens. Thank you for your time and great videos. | |||||
