| Do they fail? A few months ago a guy got crushed by a Prius when he got under it with only a scissor jack and tried cutting out the catalytic converter. With scissor jacks, the only thing supporting the car is a handful of screw threads. With hydraulic jacks, a few gaskets and hoses/lines, with the old style tower jacks that hooked up to cars' bumpers, the latch could break, the car could fall off, the stand itself could fall over or buckle... | Hello Scotty! I have an old set of 2 craftsman 3 ton jackstands. Can I safely use them for my 2002 Chevy Silverado 5.3l 2wd ext cab? If not, what do you recommend? I will be under the truck to change the transmission fluid. Thank you! | |||||

| They won't spin as freely as you're thinking they will. You're spinning the differential on that axle, and likely the driveshaft as well. I'm not completely familiar with AWD vs 4×4 like a truck has, but there has to be some kind of center differential to let the front and rear wheels spin at different speeds. There's gonna be thick gear oil in there as well that's going to resist being spun. Earlier this year I had the front end of my truck up in the air to do shocks and spun the wheels, since they were modified to be permanently locked to the center axle and I wanted to see how much effort it took to spin the drivetrain. I was surprised, it took quite a bit and the wheels wouldn't coast like I expected. I was getting 14 MPG driving like that. I swapped to manual hubs and ended up freeing around 3-4 MPG by unlocking the front wheels. All of that resistance is why AWD cars get worse gas mileage than standard 2WD vehicles. There's a lot of heavy parts to be moved. When you're pressing caliper pistons back in, make sure you remove the cap on the fluid reservoir so you're not building back pressure. I would also do as @MountainManJoe said and try spinning the axles with the calipers off to see if the wheels still don't spin at the same rate. | |||||

| the procedure is fairly straightforward, but things like rust can make it a bit of a PITA. soak the fasteners with penetrating lube ahead of time. Make sure you've get all the tools, such as jumbo socket for axle nut. You shouldn't need to remove the entire axle from the vehicle. However, if your axle seals are seeping, it might be a good time to change those. | |||||

| I recently bought a Dodge Ram Quad cab 5.7 L hemi 1500-2008. When I purchased it, the mechanic told me I would need to change the wheel hub assembly, is this something I can do at home? I watched a couple of videos, it looks fairly straightforward. I noticed in one video the guy takes the axle right out the CV joint to get the old part out, and the new part in? Is this completely necessary? Thanks, Matt | |||||
