| RE: What is a good book for learning auto tech? | 20Relevance | 3 years ago | MountainManJoe | Submit Your Question HERE | |
| @avalon04 1) I guess over 20 years. 2) It's hard to put a number on it. That's like asking how much influence primary school readers and dr seuss books had on your English development. It forms a foundation for everything that comes after. But I think the main point is that they're great for beginners. When you know nothing, it's something to get you going , enables you to accomplish a task, and you learn stuff along the way. . Of course there's no replacement for hands-on-experience, but having some guidance and learning some theory can save a lot of time and trial&error. As you gain experience, you no longer rely on all the steps and pictures as much, but the book is still useful as a reference for things like torque specs, schematics, and special procedures. I'm not a mechanic using the skills every day so often the knowledge is used once and then falls out of my head 😆 Being here on the forum helps keep it fresh though. | |||||

| As a bonus, the other book mentioned in that video was also by Tracy Martin: “How to Diagnose and Repair Automotive Electrical Systems”. The Circuit Tester tool he used was a GODIAG GT101. See links for both below: | |||||

| Alldatadiy is very invaluable since it contains the same information as what is in the service manuals. I wish some of the diagrams were a little better but the same complaints goes for the service manuals. Sometimes I print several pages out if I want to mark something up. This is the same service Scotty uses but his is “professional version”. In any event, it’s money well spent for DIYer. Added bonus, the book times are also listed for different jobs. | |||||
| Certain chapter in 1996 book "Doge, Plymouth & Chrysler Police Cars 1979-1994" | 20Relevance | 6 years ago | Sapporo Boy | Submit Your Question HERE | |
| Scotty, have you read the 1996 book Dodge, Plymouth & Chrysler Police Cars 1979-1994 by Edwin J. Sanow and John L. Bellah with Galen Govier? (For the record, the ISBN number is 0-7603-0197-2.) I ask because you might get a kick out of a certain chapter in the book that's entitled "Reliability Crisis: Maine State Police Problems." The chapter in question concerns reliability problems that the Maine State Police had with the 1978 Plymouth Fury as well as with the 1980 Dodge St. Regis. Considering your track record of criticizing Chrysler products, the chapter will likely resonate with you. | |||||
| Answer to: 2018 CrossTrek - Blue Smoke (Dumbfounded) | 20Relevance | 1 year ago | Chuck Tobias | Submit Your Question HERE | |
| There are only so many ways that oil can get into the combustion chamber. It's possible the car wasn't maintained properly, causing excessive wear. Is there any sludge in the engine? Under what conditions do you see blue smoke? At startup? At idle? When accelerating? When decelerating? If your oil level isn't dropping after 1300 miles there's not a huge amount of oil burning going on. (Did you check the oil consumption yourself or did you just take the dealer's word for it?) That would just be a bandaid that would not actually fix anything and might not help at all. Increasing oil viscosity to reduce oil burning is a trick that used to be done 50-60 years ago or more. It's quite possible that despite the checks that were done the dealer missed something. Dealers are not usually the best at doing diagnostics. In fact the way their technicians are paid discourages in-depth diagnostics. You could try the ATS Carbon Clean treatment that Scotty has recommended in the event you have stuck oil control rings due to carbon. Whatever the dealer did may not have resulted in sufficient cleanup, especially if the engine was not properly maintained in the past. That kind of thing is usually caused by exhaust heat shields or other parts that have come loose causing a rattle. Physical examination is required to find the cause. (It is extremely unlikely to be related to the oil burning issue.) If Allstate's warranty coverage is anything like their insurance coverage has historically been handled they will likely fight like crazy to deny coverage on any pretext they can come up with. | |||||

| Answer to: 5.7 Hemi V8 puff of blue smoke out of tailpipe on cold start | 20Relevance | 3 years ago | Glen_stet | Submit Your Question HERE | |
| White smoke on startup is condensation, so blue is most likely oil. When your catalytic converter heats up, it burns the oil, so there's no blue smoke then. Are you using oil between oil changes? Fortunately, there's a pretty cheap and easy test to see the condition of your rings and pistons - do a compression check dry, then put in an ounce of oil and do the compression test then. If there is substantial difference, you have worn rings. Here's Scotty demonstrating it | |||||
| Answer to: Blue coolant temperature light | 20Relevance | 3 years ago | InThrustWeTrust | Submit Your Question HERE | |
| From a 5 second google search - Two common lights you can see in your HR-V are the high and low temperature indicators. Both look like a thermometer floating in fluid. When it's red, the engine coolant temperature is too high. When it's blue, it means the coolant temperature in your Honda HR-V is low. If the light is blue, let your vehicle idle until the engine warms up and the symbol disappears. | |||||
