| @Procondor To understand how hybrids work, lets looks at how a regular gas car works. You have the gas engine and the starter. You usually just use the starter once, when you turn the key to start the car. And that's it. The engine is constantly on. And you hit the accelerator pedal to give the engine gas to move the car, the more and longer you hit the accelerator, the faster the car will go. Generally speaking, a hybrid in my book, has a gas engine and electric motor. The gas engine comes on and off as necessary to move the car. The electric motor comes on as necessary to move the car. And they both can work together to help move the car. Or they can work independently. It matters on driven conditions, and when you press the accelerator, the computer figures out which combination of gas engine and electric motor works best. The Buick is a mild hybrid. (Personally, I don't consider it a hybrid, but the term "mild hybrid" is used for this system.) It is a start-stop system. It acts more like a regular gas car, rather than a hybrid car. The only difference, is that the engine will turn off at a stop, and the starter will restart it automatically when you hit the accelerator. The Buick hybrid is more like a regular car than it is a hybrid. If you are looking for a hybrid, look for a Toyota hybrid. They are the best. | |||||

The dealership might be giving a used one, just like how some install junkyard engines in cars when their engines fail. Most new ones shouldn't cost more than $4100-4200. But the general rule for a new one should be upwards of 3k to 6 7k. | I am considering buying a new 2024 hybrid RAV4 XLE for $37,400 or saving some money and getting a used 2015 RAV4 XLE for with 70k miles for $17,200. I test drove both cars and the newer car is more spacious and better acceleration. The used car is in good shape(got it checked out by a mechanic-needs new motor mounts and brake rotors). While I can finance and afford the new car at 5% interest rate, the older model will keep me debt free. I will mostly be using the car to get to work and back which can be some traffic, mostly looking for a reliable car th ... | |||||

| Good morning, I own a 2021 XSE RAV4 hybrid. It has 51k miles on it. I just discovered (my bad for not looking into this when I bought it 2 years ago) that my hybrid battery has a 3-5 year life according to toyota (and a $3k-$5k replacement cost) but could last longer as well. I own it outright and the value is such that I could move into a low mile outback for around the same without the concern of the hybrid battery. I'm retired and I don't want to pay if I don't have to as I'm not a DIYer. I need AWD because we're moving back east in a year or two and win ... | |||||

| As others have mentioned, the Toyota hybrid is rock solid. Taxis drive the things like mad and rack up hundreds of thousands of miles on them regularly. As I live in upstate new york, Subaru is appealing, but in reality, the awd is not the superhero of winter that some make it out to be. Most of my friends that live in the area don't have awd, they know the roads are well maintained. That being said, many do have winter tires, and those do make a drastic difference in winter driving. My friends that do live up a non maintained, super steep mountain dirt road do have a Subaru with winter tires, not a bad choice for them. AWD only helps you get moving on icy conditions, but does nothing to help braking distance, or sliding off a curve due to ice and snow. If you think you will be living on non maintained roads, with hills, awd and the right winter tires will be your best bet. Subaru had one of, if not the best awd systems on the market. Lately though, the Toyota awd is much better, greatly closing the gap to Subaru's awd system. The Subaru is not a bad car, but when I compare it to a Toyota hybrid, the owners are complaining about numerous issues, electrical, transmission, etc. The toyota owners are complaining that the seats don't auto adjust, or the cup holders aren't as numerous as they would like. From what Scotty said, Subaru's are also switching to silicone instead of gaskets in their engines, not sure if it is all of them, or just some models, but that can cause a big expense down the road, likely worse than a hybrid battery. The transmission's of the subaru are pretty good, but not up to toyota either. For me, it would not be worth switching to a car that would likely have more issues down the road than just a hybrid battery, and especially a reliable hybrid battery at that. Now if you were wanting to switch to a low mileage Toyota awd, that would be a different story. | |||||

| I usually recommend Toyota hybrids over any other hybrid, even Honda. Toyota has 20 years of time tested hybrid technology. Prius technology has made it across their entire fleet. However Honda has a compelling hybrid technology. It is their third attempt at creating a hybrid system, and it is significantly different than their Honda predecessors, and even Toyota. Honda predecessors weren’t necessarily bad in terms of quality. They just weren’t as popular as Toyota’s technology. Current generation Honda hybrids are basically an EV but get its power from gasoline. Very fascinating. If it is was any other company I probably wouldn’t give it a second look, but it is Honda, a company known for quality and longevity. Toyota hybrids usually split the duty of propelling the vehicle between the ICE and the electric motor. If you want tried and true, go with a Toyota Camry hybrid. If you are willing to take a chance, go with the Honda Accord hybrid. Heck, drive them both and see what you like better. | |||||

| Let's brake it down: 3rd generation RAV4 - A lifted Corolla, mediocre, performance in safety is very subpar. 2005-2008: Toyota had issues with the 2.4 Engine stripping head bolts, the V6 is incredible. 2009-2012: Perfectly good engines and transmission both 4 cylinder and V6. (+) Mechanically solid in 2010-2012 (-) Outdated feeling, lacks safety. 4th generation RAV4 - Pretty much a facelift of the 3rd generation. 2013-2014: Scored POOR in the IIHS Small overlap frontal offset category. 2015-2019: FINALLY got decent safety score, AND FINALLY, got t ... | |||||

| If you want hybrid a brand new base RAV4 hybrid starts at $30k msrp. If gasoline only is fine too then brand new RAV4 base version starts at almost $28k msrp. No way that $20k for 138k mile car can be worth it. And it's a hybrid so it has lost some of its hybrid battery life too. The only key in this market for buying at msrp without dealership added stuff is find a dealership willing to sell at msrp and put down a deposit on an incoming unit and wait for it to be built and arrive. $20k for that used RAV4 is not worth it at all. | |||||

If it is was any other company I probably wouldn’t give it a second look, but it is Honda, a company known for quality and longevity. Toyota hybrids usually split the duty of propelling the vehicle between the ICE and the electric motor across all speed ranges. If you want tried and true, go with a Toyota hybrid. They have nearly 25 years of time tested hybrid technology. If you are willing to take a chance, go with the Honda hybrid. Me personally, while I am a big fan of Toyota hybrids, Honda hybrids seem quite compelling. Heck, drive them both and see what you like better. | |||||

| TBH, it’s really hard to say. Toyota is relatively new to the turbo and turbo hybrid game. so there is little track record of either system produced en masse for Toyota. And their turbo hybrid is vastly different than their naturally aspirated hybrids. One argument is that the turbo is “simpler”. Not as simple as naturally aspirated, but also not as complex as a turbo hybrid. And you don’t have to worry about the hybrid battery because there is none. On the flip side, the hybrid motor helps power the drivetrain, so maybe* the turbo doesn’t have to work as hard. (I say maybe because this is just a guess, there is little data to support this guess.) If it were Toyota’s regular hybrid, I’d say go with that over their turbo. But since it is a new hybrid and a new turbo, it is hard to say. | |||||

| Hey Scotty, just want to share a story about something that happened the past few weeks. Over the holidays a friend had to leave their 2023 Tucson hybrid at our house. The car was running good and had less than 10,000 miles. Honestly, we were impressed with the tech features and how much mpg it can get. Our friend is a pilot so he had some things to take care of which is why it was left with us. The vehicle sat in our trailer parking for about two weeks. I did start it up and let it warm up for a bit after the first seven days. The car started up fine, nothing wrong. After two weeks my friend returns and decides to start the car and the engine would not even turn on. We think maybe since it was cold, and it sat for a bit perhaps the battery was low. Eventually the car turned on, but the engine would not start. Then on the dash it said "check hybrid system". The car had to be towed at the dealer because it would not start. The dealer comes back and says apparently the wiring for the hybrid system is bad. Apparently the engine runs off the hybrid system when starting, so if the hybrid does not work, the engine does not turn over. Also the dealer said the wiring for the hybrid system is soy based in order to "save the environment", they think perhaps rodents ate the wiring harnesses. The thing is we live in Vegas and we do not really have rodents here?? The crazy thing is that this is apparently not covered under warranty and the total cost for parts and labor was 8000$, my buddy was able to get it down to 7800$. This is located in ABC Hyundai in Las Vegas, Nevada. The car was taken there Jan 8, 2024. I just wanted to share this story so maybe word can get out about this situation. My friend spent 46,000$ on this car and almost a year later has to pay another 7800$ because Hyundai decided to use soy based products in their hybrid system. We feel kinda bad for him because he's a new pilot starting his career and he spent most of his savings on this car and now this is not even covered under warranty. This was our first time experiencing a Korean car brand in our house. Our family has owned only Toyotas and late 90s Mercedes Benzes with normal gasoline engines and they've never had these issues. | |||||

| The first two codes are interrelated hybrid battery problems. Most likely, the hybrid battery needs replacing. Obviously you would need to diagnose and test to make sure it is the hybrid battery. The last code is an EVAP code. I’m not sure for the solution for that. See @chucktobias comment above for details of each. And possible solutions. With that said, in theory***, you might be able to run the car forever despite the two hybrid battery codes. The Civic of that generation comes with a backup starter in case of hybrid battery or hybrid motor failure. It should run like a regular gas Civic, it won’t turn off at stop lights or stop signs. I say in theory because they I have never seen one do it with my own eyes. But I do nerd out on hybrid technology. | |||||

| I have a 2004 Prius at 300K+ miles. I needed to change the hybrid battery around 275K+ miles. You'll get a huge warning when it is time to replace the hybrid battery. And an error code. The good thing about Toyota's hybrid is that you can still keep driving the car with a subpar battery. You just don't get the extra oomph from the electric motor. Just make sure you get it changed soon after getting the warning. Technically speaking, I don't think it is that hard to replace the battery. You spend more time removing the seats and side/back panels of the interior, than actually touching the battery. (Just make sure to remove the orange safety disconnect on the battery before you do anything.) The problem might be finding a compatible battery. Most of the forum and Scotty are probably against a used hybrid. And I don't blame them. From my POV, if it is a Toyota hybrid, everything checks out, and you know what to expect given the age and mileage of the car (and of course if it is the right price), then it may be worthwhile deal. Toyota hybrid's are the only ones I would take that gamble. Any other hybrid, no way. | |||||

| The Suzuki Ignis hybrid isn’t a full hybrid like the Prius. It’s a mild hybrid. What’s the difference? A full hybrid can run off the internal combustion engines, the electric motor, or both at the same time. A mild hybrid is basically start stop technology, that turns the engine on and off if the car is idle. It’s not necessarily bad technology, just not what we think of when we think of hybrids. If you are looking for a full hybrid, i recommend almost any Toyota hybrid. They have 20 years of time tested technology. On Suzuki specifically, we don’t have them in the US, but I would jump at a chance to own some models. I love the simplicity of their user interface and practicality of their designs. On the Ignis, I only recommend the second generation. Not the first. The first was built in partnership with GM, a company I’m not too fond of. | |||||

| The latest generation CR-V hybrid is different than previous generation Honda hybrids and current generations Toyota hybrids. The CR-V hybrid acts more like an EV with a gas generator rather than a traditional hybrid. In usual hybrids like the Prius and Toyota technology, the ICE (Internal Combustion Engine) and the electric motor go back and forth, throughout most speed ranges. The ICE actually drives the car. With the CRV hybrid, the electric motor drives the car until about 45 MPH, and then the ICE may take over. The ICE acts more like a generator than actually drive the car below 45 MPH. So you basically have an gas powered EV, similar to a hydrogen powered EV, for anything below 45 MPH. One of the biggest benefits of this technology, is that when the engine does run, it is operating at near peak efficiency and rev range when compared to regular cars. It's compelling technology, but not as time tested as Toyota hybrid technology. Honda is a company that focuses on quality, so I would be open to an Honda hybrid. I know other on the forum like to see how things pan out the first few years of a model before jumping on board. But if you were going to get a hybrid, the only two companies I would get them from is Honda and Toyota. | |||||
