Scotty always says Toyotas are the best cars when it comes to good engineering there for reliability but I was looking into buying a car recently came across a 2008 Camry and just found out about 07-08-09 Camrys having horrible engines that cause insane oil consumption. I was wondering what is up with that?

Quality fell during those years the piston rings were made wrong and production was moved to the United States and many 4 cylinder Toyota/Scion models between 2006 and 2013 burned oil, often resulting, according to Toyota's TSB "cylinder misfire code po3##" and often engine failure. I'd avoid cars with this engine, which is the 2AZ-FE 2.4 I4 engine.

To give a real world piece of evidence, my friend owns a RAV4 with that engine. Lets just say they aren't impressed with a Toyota having engine problems at 60k miles.

Toyota repaired a lot of them like Inthrustwethrust said, but the warranty was pretty short it came in 2015 and vehicles over 100k miles didn't get fixed, so many are still burning oil.

You will also realize this vehicle is on the Toyota/Honda problem list that can be found through the used car buying FAQ page, just go to FAQ then "I need a vehicle" and many helpful pages are linked

It’s a well known issue. They have higher oil consumption. Have you actually inspected any of them to verify if they’re indeed burning excessive oil? Because Toyota fixed a lot of them.

If it bothers you that much, just skip those years. If you read the FAQ section of this website, you’ll find excellent articles on this topic.

Here’s just one of them - https://carkiller.com/scottykilmer/qa/progressive-common-and-major-problems-toyota-and-honda-vehicles-not-to-buy/
If you search for these keywords in this website, you’ll find plenty of threads discussing this very issue.
