07 corolla hard to start and engine sputters

07 Corolla with 258k miles bought recently, runs well other than that. But when I start it I do have to turn the ignition for a while for it to start, and the engine will sputter while it’s warming up. Runs pretty ok while driving other than that, What could it be?

Have you performed a diagnostic scan? Checked fuel pressure?

@chucktobias Not yet, although I did take it to a shop for alignment and they did mention that my starting issue may be due to a fuel system problem, that’s the only clue I have. I also scanned the car before driving and it really only showed that it needed an o2 sensor with the check engine light on.

The car is 17 years old with high mileage. How old is the fuel filter?

What was the actual code? Diagnostic codes don't tell you a particular part is bad, they tell you a condition exists that may have a number of different causes.

Did you check live data such as fuel trims?

@chucktobias I’m not sure how old the fuel filter is I pretty much just bought the car extremely cheap not expecting much. When I got the car scanned by my co worker I’m pretty sure they did a really basic scan , but I could definitely try and scan it again tomorrow and check live data. Would that give me more info on the issue? Or at least a more specific answer?

If fuel trims are out of whack that would certainly suggest a fuel system problem. You could also check some other basics such as MAF and O2 sensor operation. There's plenty of information online about interpreting the data.
