Where can I find a 1 ohm/10 watt resistor in St. Louis?

We don't have radio shacks anymore and Home Depot was no help

  1. unhook the battery
  2. press the brake pedal

you don't need resistors

Does anyone know where I can get the "stupid thing"

You actually don't need any stupid thing.  All you need is to unhook the battery, and then press the brake, or turn on the headlights, or dome light.... whatever. Those are all basically resistors that produce light.

Keep in mind also, that this does not reset everything and often not permanently. Check engine lights will come back if you don't fix the underlying problem. A lot of engine/tranny calibration data is stored in special memory that doesn't require power. More annoyingly , it will zap your clock, radio stations, and driver centre settings, seat positions, etc.

Amazon, Ebay, Mouser, Digikey, etc.

Any electronic supply store plus all the others mentioned above.

clearing codes without expensive scan tool using 1 ohm 10 watt resistor

I am having difficulty buying a 1 ohm 10 watt resistor

Here's the thing about that... if you use a 1ohm resistor, and you make a mistake disconnecting the battery, you could end up with a fire on your hands.

Current = 12 V / 1 Ohm = 12 A (from Ohm's Law)

Power = R × I2 = 144 Watts (from Power definition)

Dumping 144 W into a 10 W resistor could make quite the spectacular fireworks show.

It's 100x easier and safer to just turn on the lights, or press brake pedal to discharge any power. And you don't have to hunt down any special parts.

a kitchen electric kettle should have about 10 ohms, and can dissipate many, MANY watts of power.

Here's an alternate method.

Hello Scotty I have a 2004 dodge caravan with an evap code. I watched your video on clearing codes without expensive scan tool using 1 ohm 10 watt resistor. I checked auto parts stores no one seems to have one. Can you tell me where I can acquire this resistor?

Big Fan,

You can purchase resistors from electronics vendors such as Mouser, or they can be found at Amazon and eBay,

Hi Scotty

will the 1 ohm 10 watt resistor safely reset the computer on a 2002 Corvette manual with 58,000 miles?…….Thanks Chris

Hello:  Does anyone know where I can get the "stupid thing" Scotty Kilmer is talking about in his recent video for resets?  Checked the Youtube video and I see no links for the resistor he is talking about and I need one a.s.a.p.  Thank you!

Now that Radio Shack is defunct, and Batteries Plus does not carry these, where do you source them?

Was wondering if I can get some clarification on the video (This stupid thing will save you hundreds in car repairs)…. In his video he says to use a 10 W 1ohm but when I paused the video it clearly stated 10W 1kohm does anybody know what is the right resistor to use

You need to fix the EVAP problem, or the check engine light will keep coming back. It's telling you there's an engine problem that you need to fix. Resetting the computer doesn't fix that problem.

I have a 08 Honda Pilot 4WD EXL, 195,000 miles.  Have some weird electrical issues.

Saw Scotty's video about clearing codes and resetting computers using a 10W 1 ohm resistor.

Is there any issues in doing this?

Thanks

Mark

An electronics supply house like MCM or Mouser will have them. You can also get them from eBay, for example:
