1979 Ford pinto - Chicago area

Hi Scotty, Just recently bought a used car, 1979 Ford pinto Cruising Wagon model. V6 engine . When I press the gas it’s shuts off, . Just recently changes the solenoid as well as had the alternator checked and both checked out fine. Brand new correct battery , when I changed the solenoid, it didn’t want to turn on but did crank and stayed cranking (stuck ) luckily it shut off after a 40 secs or so . I freaked out a bit cause I couldn’t get it to cut off even removed the key and still was cranking . I tapped the solenoid later in the day and it turned on just fine , however again it would shut off when I press the gas. Any idea what next steps I should take or get this bad boy running .

You may need to overhaul the carburetor particularly if that has not been done since the switch to ethanol-contaminated gasoline.

Wow I didn't know there were any running pintos left. Well there's a zillion things that can cut off cars it could just be the fuel pump is weak or the fuel filters clogged I would test those first

Any chance you can Referal me over to find information to do such on the pinto wagon, I’m having trouble sourcing information as this is the first time I’m getting down and greasy with a vehicle

Scotty doesn't typically answer follow-up comments. I'd suggest getting on RockAuto and getting a service manual. They carry digital copies of the OEM service manual for several vehicles.

This is $22 and change. I bought one for my '79 Catalina last year and it has been more than worth the investment.
