Old school question. My 84 chevy is stalling while driving full speed. Sometimes it will start again after sitting awhile, but the last 2 times I had to tow it. Also, at about 65 miles per hour it starts skip/cutout slightly. I changed the fuel filter checked for plugged fuel line between the filter and the mechanical fuel pump. Test the fuel pump and it is pumping gas. It will fire if I put a little gas in the carb. After doing that I put in some fresh gas and it started. Drove it for 3 weeks still had the hesitation, but did not stall for 3 weeks. Now it has stalled again going about 60mph and won't start. Any thoughts?
Get a new fuel pressure regulator, or rebuild kit, whichever.
Where would the regulator be located? It is a straight shot from the fuel pump to the carb. Is it inside the casing that the fuel filter slides into? Not sure what that casing is called, but it attached to the actual carb.
You never said you had a carburetor. Pass on the fuel pressure regulator. If you have the Quadrajet carb I think you have, it probably needs to be rebuilt or replaced with a rebuilt unit, M4ME - $381.79 at Rock Auto or a rebuild kit from O'Reily, AutoZone, NAPA, Advance, Parts Geek and everywhere for about $20.00. Only other thing I can think of is the HEI ignition control module inside the distributor might be going south.
