1991 4runner 169k (well maintained) just cut off like I ran out of gas riding down the road. Was taken to a shop that told me I had fuel and that my timing belt went. I took half the front of the engine apart and the timing belt is on there just fine. Sprayed some starting fluid in one of the sensors holes for air intake. Didn't start. Tested for spark. I have spark. Can't hear the fuel pump kick on, but wouldn't some starting fluid at least get it to start a little? It literally just felt as though it ran out of gas and then would just turn over, but not even try to start. Any other way to check this thing for fuel pump action? Could it be something else? Would I still have spark if the 30yo ignition ignitor went bad? Thanks so much
Searching thru the internet I see there is a FUEL PUMP switch located in the Air Flow Meter sensor of all things.. Better get some wiring diagrams on this thing.
I have a Chilton's with wiring.
Not unheard of for engines to "jump time". Everything would look good externally. Have to bring #1 piston to top of stroke and look at timing marks. At this point it can be 180 degees off depending on top of compression or top of exhaust stroke. As long as one or the other, timing should be ok.
No sound from fuel pump...the sound can be faint.
Absolutely no sound...check fuse, swap relay, wiring, pump...if you have access, you can apply 12 volts to fuel pump at its nearby connector.
To be effective, a small squirt of starting fluid directly into the throttle body...should fire briefly.
If not, crankshaft position sensor...look for oil externally on its connector and for swollen wiring insulation...its under pressure and can wick engine oil into wiring and short out. Also rodent or otherwise damage of wiring from sensor to engine computer.
