So I was interested in the market for a older Volvo and came across a 4 cylinder 1993 Volvo 940 turbo for cheap to get the car but I know a issue will a rose soon it says the trans not so great I'm willing to spend some mo law for it but not too much is the system easy since it's older vehicle or is it complex for a mechanic? Also is there any thing else I should look out for I heard about head gasket failure can occur. Only reason I ask because I heard from many places that this car can go far with bar minimal required maintenance which Im willing to do. Thanks
I would pass. Look for Toyota Corolla or Honda Civic if you want something cheap.
You are talking about 29 years old car with bad transmisison (and who knows what else needs to be repalced soon).
Pass.
Those rear-drive Volvo "bricks" were tough cars, reliable as anvils that just ate up the miles. However that was decades ago and like any other car that age, time can bring a host of problems. It needs a transmission right out of the starting gate, who knows what else it's going to need? A turbocharger for $$$$ maybe? Rebuild the suspension? Rust problems? Depending on how much is worn out or deteriorated you might wind up having to rebuild practically the whole car.
There are people who are fans of these old Volvos that still drive them today, but the owners typically know the cars inside and out and are willing to put in the time and money to keep them on the road. (Also most will have another car as backup when their brick is laid up waiting for parts or repairs.) Not a good choice for the average person just looking for a reliable car to be their daily ride.
