Scotty,
I just ran across a 1996 4runner for sale. 219K miles, not a lot of rust on body (couldn't check the frame, I had to leave), engine sounded good. I just didn't have enough time to check it out thoroughly. What should I look for and is it worth buying in the first place? It is going for a great price.
Radiator replaced (...) leakage which affected the transmission.
The transmission, when stopped, has to be shifted into it's lowest gear and up to drive coming form a standing stop in traffic.
RUN.
radiator leaks that affect the transmission are when coolant gets into the ATF and causes the friction packs to get contaminated. It needs a new transmission, it's maybe worth $200 if the bodywork is in great shape - but the transmission on that thing is DEAD (can be a cool project car if you're working on it, but not worth a penny over $200)
I didn't buy the 4runner.
Scotty will tell you to check the frame for rust before buying.
Update: The 4runner I'm looking at has had the radiator replaced because of leakage which affected the transmission. The transmission, when stopped, has to be shifted into it's lowest gear and up to drive coming form a standing stop in traffic. Sound as if the transmission may need replacing and this is a 4-wheel drive car .Nothing else appears to be wrong with the car. Is it worth buying?
No. I would look at something else then.
