A/C smells and Cabin Filter

I took my car to the dealership to check why it smells when I turn my A/C on. They checked it and said it had mold in there and I needed the A/C tubings flushed and to put A/C frigi-fresh in there (costing $204.51) AND to replace the cabin filter (cost $60). I couldn't afford that and said I'll have to do that next month because that scared me that we are breathing in mold!  My friend showed me a YouTube video on how to replace the cabin filter myself and the price of the filter online ($25).  I then found your video on just spraying lysol through the vents and wondered if the A/C flush is ever needed and if how often I should be replacing the Cabin filter? Am I being hooked into just wasting extra money?  Thank you for the lysol video Scotty, I am doing that tonight so I can leave it open overnight!  Your website is an awesome & beneficial find for anyone and shows how great you are as a person to do this for people! God Bless you and your members! {black}:inlove:

spraying lysol through the vents

Don't use Lysol. They sell products specifically for for car AC systems that work much better, and they're inexpensive. If you live somewhere humid then this will be an ongoing issue. Wouldn't hurt to do it every year.

  1. make sure the A/C evaporator drains are clear. They can get plugged up and water will pool.
  2. Shut your A/C off a few minutes before you arrive home, but turn the fan on full and just blow outside air for a while. This will dry out the evaporator core and help prevent mold.

how often I should be replacing the Cabin filter?

When it gets dirty. It's easy to check, so look at it, and decide if you want to be breathing what comes out of it.

Thank you!  The filter is dirty so I'm going to get the replacement and replace it myself.  I'll go to auto zone or O'Reilly to see what they have for the AC.

I've been blowing outside warm air about 1 min before getting home and then turning off ac when I get home.

I did use lysol this past weekend and left everything open for the day.  I also removed the cabin filter before spraying lysol.
