Help! My sister has a ‘96 Explorer that originally wouldn’t start, when we did get it to start the idle was very rough. Changed the air filter, cleaned the throttle body, replaced the fuel filter. The idle got better, but now when accelerating if you’re giving the truck gas and immediately let off the gas pedal, the RPM’s go down and it struggles to stay idling. It will stall if you slam on the gas and then pull off of the gas quickly. PLEASE HELP

Mileage?

also throwing a code for EGR valve milage is about 120K

Check fuel pressure. How old is the fuel pump?

I’m not sure. She hasn’t had the vehicle all that long.

Chuck, of all the pro's on here I like you the best.

Your answers are always informative and to the point.

Good work.

BTW, I've owned two AMC products over the years. An Alliance, which was a REAL POS,

and a 1988 Jeep Comanche which was absolutely great.

Had it til 2006 with ZERO problems.

Thanks for the kind words, but bear in mind I'm not a pro, I'm strictly amateur! I've only worked on a limited number of vehicles, all of them older (my newest one is 1999), so in most cases I can only give generic advice based on general automotive knowledge and (hopefully) common sense. Also I hate to see people ripped off by all the sharks out there. When it comes to specific answers on late model vehicles though, that territory is for Scotty and the other real pros who come on board here.

Yeah, the Alliance was a real piece of garbage. When Scotty talks about how bad Nissan has become since Renault bought into them I think back to AMC and what a disaster that turned into. (Really the only good thing that came out of that hookup was the 1984+ Cherokee and Comanche which AMC would not have been able to develop without Renault's funding.)

Either clean or replace the EGR valve and check all vacuum line connections.
