Have it checked over by a mechanic for issues. Price is definitely good. These were on the edge of what became an issue with cheap head gaskets. 96 wasn’t as bad as early 2000’s but that is a concern depending on what motor is in it. Have the mechanic check for that. You can order a head gasket leak tester online or get one at Harbor Freight for around 25-35 bucks. Amazon has em to. Needless to say if head gasket is leaking, walk away.
The consensus seems to be that Subaru's head gasket problems started with the 1999 models, but I'd still have it checked carefully. If there are any external drips from the head gasket area I'd run away. Also check condition of the timing belt. You can't expect much for $1800 in this market so if a good mechanic says the car checks out I'd say go for it. Even if it lasts just a year you'll be ahead of the game.
