At startup especially on cold mornings, I notice the power steering goes in and out when I pull out of a parking space. I have to really put effort into turning the steering wheel just to make what would be an easy turn if the engine was warm. I also hear squealing when i turn the steering wheel completely to either side during turns - this happens regardless of the engine being cold or warm. After the car warms up, the power steering seems to work fine.
What could be the problem(s) & solution(s)?
Sounds like a steering rack, same as my subaru. Check to see if it's leaking on either side. It's right under the engine so it warms up with it, that's why it stops when the engine is heated up
Has the power steering fluid leaked/have you been adding fluid? The power steering pump is powered by an accessory (fan) belt. If that belt is not adjusted tight enough or is worn, it will squeal when asked to transmit power, especially before things warm up.

Hi, I don't see any fluid leaks. I'll check that the belt is taut. Thanks for the pointer.
