2000 Ford Taurus SE Wagon
I am going to be purchasing this car and for the price of $600 is not bad. It only has 83,000 miles but I noticed fuel was reading half full and in a matter of minutes it was "empty". But I knew that was not right because I was still able to drive.
I believe that it is a bad gas gauge. Is there anyone that can give me any thoughts on what it could be and how I can fix it on my own?
If your trip odometer still works, just reset the odometer every time you get gas and don't bother messing with the sending unit. My 1999 Ranger has 300k miles on it, and the sending unit is funky. It's a rectangular tank, and the sending unit will read completely full until I've driven 60-70 miles, then it goes down fast. My trip odometer still works, so I fill up every 270 miles. That leaves me with a quarter tank at fill-up.
It's likely the 25-year-old sending unit in the gas tank is bad. Test it.
