I have a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 2wd without the transfer case and the 4.0 I6 engine and the 42RLE automatic transmission with 183,734 miles. The car will shift from first to second but no further. One of my friends is telling me its a sensor and my other friend says it needs a full rebuild.

I had the same problem, and recently I just replaced the MAP sensor and the TPS (Throttle position sensor), and that solved my problem; commonly, the failure of that sensors are confused with a bad transmission, try replacing those.
