My neighbor is offering to sell me a 2000 Lexus ES300 with 215k miles in good condition for $1800. I have heard of sludge problems on these cars. Is there a best way to inspect for sludge prior to committing to purchase. Are there any other issues to be concerned about. All of my cars are GM or Ford and each have over 200k miles so the mileage alone is not scary to me, but I an new to Toyota/Lexus.

Open the oil cap and check inside.

You are talking about 22 years old car with 200k miles on it. So many things could go wrinig with it, especially the rubber and plastic parts.
This car also has a rubber timing belt that needs to be replaced at certain age/milege intervals alongisde with waterpump,....
Do you know when was the last time it was serviced?
