2000 Nissan Xterra Lifters VG33E 3.3L V6 144Kmi
I have lifter clatter on startup for 1-5 seconds. Worse when cold out. No codes even though it was misfiring last winter for tiny bit due to this on rare startups. It is an interference engine so I don't want a bent rod. Seems like a weak spring or plugged oil hole. I think I can just go in via valve covers, take off rocker bars and swap in new lifters, correct? It seems easier on a push rod engine like this than newer vvt designs. Do I need to do this soon or is this an ok thing to live with for now? Would a really good scan tool be able to figure out which bank/cylender its on if the misfires were that long ago? I've tried engine oil cleaning treatments and it seems to help a bit but it comes back. I've put in 1/2 court marvel mystery oil with reg oil and that doesnt seem to help. Also, I can either find really expensive OEM lifters or really cheap lifters. I found a mid range cost lifter kit by DNJ, would that be any better than the super cheap ones or should I spend the 350-400 on OEM. Nothing at Napa...Cheapos at rock auto or amazon. Not sure what to do on parts if I do this.
Tracy, I live with it because it's not that many miles and it shouldn't be too physically worn. I believe you may replacing those lifters is no easy job
is this an ok thing to live with for now?
if it goes away after a few seconds it's ok.

Yes if the information was still stored in the computer, you could. It doesn't even need that fancy of a tool.
I know it won't be simple taking plenum off and getting to it but I've replaced the gaskets there once and there is a video out there how to replace these once you get there. It would take me a day or more. Good to know it isn't going to likely kill the engine quickly. Thanks. This thing won't throw codes easily. It will misfire and not show a code. The MAFS will make it stall out and then make it not start, still won't throw a code. No code for fuel pump either. No check engine light.
even if it doesn't trigger the CEL or produce a DTC, (it only does this when it gets bad), the per-cylinder misfire counts are stored.
