2000 Toyota MR2 Spyder w/ 5-speed SMT (55k miles)
I've been experiencing a "sticky shifting sequence"—it has trouble going from neutral into reverse and first gear. When it does go into gear, shifting from first to second feels physically sticky. So I removed the top plastic piece inside the shifter to try cleaning it.
You can see broken plastic pieces in the first picture. Now the car won’t shift into any gear—it’s stuck in neutral, even when I try to put it into reverse or drive. The dash just flashes “N,” and then stops flashing when I put it back into neutral.
Next, I’ll begin the self-relearn process, try scanning for errors using an OBD-II scanner, attempt a system reset (flashing it), and inspect the lockout solenoid for damage. I’m also considering replacing the Shift Lever Position Sensor (Toyota part #89451-17010).
The plastic gate/detent plate is part of the gated shift lock mechanism.
I've posted on the MR2 Spyder forums:
I really appreciate all the advice and help.
The only error code that consistently shows up is P1880 (Accumulator Pressure Sensor).

attempt a system reset (flashing it),
Beware. A memory reset is not the same thing as "flashing" a control module. They are very different things.
Looks like it's a cable shifted transmission. You'll need to inspect the linkage.

note also the revised synchronizer ring for Canadian models. Unfortunately, the self-relearn procedure didn’t work. I even tried disabling the lockout mechanism/linkage and then attempted the self-relearn again, with no luck. The only error code that consistently shows up is P1880 (Accumulator Pressure Sensor).
I also noticed a strange noise coming from the transmission fluid reservoir area or pump, almost like the sound of a power antenna activating, during a cold start, even though the radio was off the entire time. By the way, the solenoid is hot.
