2001 Honda Accord in rough shape. Is it worth getting it for $300?

Hello my co workers husband got his wife’s old car but they are trying to sell his old 2001 Honda Accord 4 cylinder sedan with 150,000 miles. the problem is that it’s got all these warning lights on and the engine makes a put put noise they think it only needs a tune up. They will take the best offer they could get. I was thinking of offering  $300 no more than that and only drive to work and back on back roads being I only work 5 mins from home and use the RAV4 for everything else. Is it worth offering $300 if I even got it and if it becomes totally un drivable could I just scrap it?

Maybe get it scanned first. I mean for 300 that ain't much to lose but still. See how much mechanical and electrical work needs to be done beforehand I would say.

if it "only needed a tune-up", they would have done that a long time ago. They're getting rid of it because it's not worth keeping.

You can try offering $300, but it's unlikely they would accept (I wouldn't). It's going to need a bunch of money to get it going, and you don't know where it will stop.

If I were you, I'd spend more money, save yourself the frustration, and get something that actually works

It sounds like a headache. If you have an interest, do as.@BruceREE recommended and scan it.

I would just avoid the trouble all together myself.

you guys are right it’s probably not a good idea. For awhile I was looking for a second hand back up car along with my 2016 RAV4 but only 150,000 on a 2001 Honda with these many problems is not a good sign. These people obviously didn’t maintain it properly. My dad has a 2015 Honda CRV with 125,000 miles and still drives like it was brand new. I’m not going for it plus I’m a Truck/Suv guy anyway.

I think that's the best plan. I get the temptation, don't get me wrong. But I think you'd regret it when you find out how much it will cost to get running right.

If you are looking for a project where, either you know what you are doing, or you want to learn, it might be a good one to get.  But if you are looking for a daily driver, or backup, it is totally uncertain.
