Hello, I just picked up this car and I had to put in a new battery. It started right up but was running very poorly then I tried putting it in gear. It sounded like it quietly and gently went into gear and the check engine light came on and the car suddenly kicked up and started running perfectly and purring like a kitten. but it didn't move... I went through the gears and head he car and engine sound like it was shifted but it didn't move. I then noticed the check engine light had gone away but the break light was lit up, so i pulled the break release and the light stayed. Tried going through the gears again. and still no movement i hit the gas and it sounded like it was in neutral. What could be causing this? Thank you in advance for any help.

That thing is 22 years old, it could be a lot of things. You indicate that this was a recent purchase - was it doing anything like this when you bought it? Did you have a pre-purchase inspection done by a mechanic?
Check to see if you have a busted drive axle. Aside from that possibility it sounds like the transmission has up and died on you. Does it have sufficient fluid? What is the fluid's condition? Is there anything suspicious when scanning for codes and live data?
Correct I picked it up at auction and I honestly don't have a good mechanic around here I know and trust. A appreciate pointing me in the right direction. I will get a scan tool on it and see what it pulls up on codes. need to get it up in the air and check the undercarriage anyhow. I was honestly excited it started up. I do plan on changing all of its fluids and giving a good tune up. Was just checking to get any wisdom from here to see if the symptoms may have been a sign of something simple. (bad sensor or something) I will look at these and see what I come up with.
Well, now i almost feel like a dummy, but I figured out the problem. I was Detailing the interior and was taking a break in the back seat and I was admiring how good the front was looking and I took a good look at the break and read where it said push off. Hopped in the front and had to step really hard but got it to pop back up. Started the car and Break light was not on. put car in Drive and it didnt move put it in neutral and tried pushing the car with my foot out the door and couldnt move it... Put it in Drive and really gave it some gas and heard the frozen breaks make noise and the car tried moving... Did same steps in Reverse.. Trans is fine just have to repair breaking system. Was going to replace the pads, rotors, and calipers anyways. Call this a win!
