Why does my car burn oil

I have a question for you a family member is giving me a 2001 Toyota Avalon. It burns oil. My family member said it burns less in winter. And smokes bad when he refills it but as the level goes down it burns less. His mechanic said oil rings are worn or don’t have the tension. My frien Joey says it’s likely the valve seals cuz he’s own the same car and in his case it was valve seals. One thing I will check once I get the car is the purge valve as well. But in your experience in the 2001 Avalon what the most common reason for oil burn on this model. It’s has 230,000 to 250,000 roughly. It’s automatic.

Engine probably is worn out. Do a wet vs. dry compression test to check for ring wear.

just keep a jug of oil in the trunk and check the levels periodically. it's a 20 plus year old car with over 200,000 miles don't put any money into it

That’s what I was thinking. I could try Scotty Kilmer suggestion on putting the newer Lucas oil treatment for variable timing engines. Not the thick one but the thinner one in a small can. If anything I do have a mechanic friend that could drop a lower mileage engine in it. But I may not bother. I may just use it till I get something better down the line. Donno what ever works out really.

Again I wouldn't put in used engine into vehicle that has over 200,000 miles on the transmission and is over 20 years old .don't put any major money into it

As a side note the mechanic told him not to mess with the valve cover because of the knock sensor. Witch I thought was strange thing to say. He had a 3rd party knock sensor and it threw codes the mechanic told him to buy oem knock sensor. Witch solve the codes but I though it was strange he said not to mess with the valve covers because of the knock sensor made no sense to me.
