I have a side job delivering Chinese Food and I’m looking at 2001 Toyota Corolla with 176k for 1700...are these cars good for this sort of thing?

They have excessive oil consumption issues. I'd pay the extra buck and get an 04-08, or get a Camry. Other than that they are good cars if maintained and you would want to have a mechanic check it out.

He probably doesn’t care about oil consumption if he’s only using it as a runabout for food delivery. He can just keep adding oil, as long as it runs & drives.

Yeah just wanted to let him know other than that they are good cars (well from what I heard my experience with a 97 Corolla is that it is a decent not great car I don't know why that worked out that way) but Corolla should be reliable.

If I'm paying 1700 for anything, for any reason, I care that it's an oil burner..

Well I don’t know about Chinese food specifically since the Corolla is Japanese, but if a good mechanic checks out the car before you buy it & he says it’s in excellent condition, then sure, you can go right ahead!

$1700 is not much for a car these days & if it’s in good shape mechanically, who cares about any cosmetic blemishes which it may have..

Don't buy it unless a reputed mechanic gives you the go ahead.

If you live in a state that does not need the Emission inspection and mechanic gives you ok, go right a head, otherwise think twice since these cars can burn oil like mad and you may have some issues down the road with the catalytic converter. There are other options you can consider as @Kerem said. Another car that you can consider is Toyota Solara. They have huge trunk and you can take advantage of it. They are not that popular but they are bullet proof. I saw them going 300k miles easy. Get a i4 to save gas.

Just pick a different year camry, corolla accord, civic, or honda fit.  I wouldn't pay 1700 for anything known to have oil burning problems.
