Looking at a Mazda 3 2007

I am looking at a 2007 Mazda 3 with 80000 miles and a 5 speed manual transmission. Car has the 2.3L 4 Cylinder. First off, were those engines reliable? If I keep up with the maintenance, could it last me 300000 miles? Lastly, what are some common problems with that model year of Mazda 3? Thanks in advance.

I have a 2007 Mazda 3 grand touring hatchback 5 speed manual transmission. Engine blew at 88k miles, no warning blew a piston out down through the oil pan. Being that the car was in such good shape otherwise, I initially wanted to put a new motor in. However after extensive research, I had found copious complaints of premature engine failure and an attempted class action against mazda because of this crappy motor. Owners were reporting failures at 80-100k miles. So I let it sit for 3 or 4 years because I didn't see the point in replacing the motor with the same faulty one. I found a guy that succesfully replaced his faulty Mazda motor with a ford fusion motor. The block was the same just needed to keep (or in my case get another) original Mazda 3 oil pan. The transmission bolted slightly different but other than that worked perfect. That engine is going strong 2015 until the present. However, now everything EXCEPT the motor is crappy. I don't know how much of this potentially may have to do with it sitting for so long. I love my Mazda 3 and is proving hard to part with even considering this list of problems I am about to detail below. I had issues with the shocks and struts and the large 18" rims and low profile tires made my car ride like a brick. My wheels bent and I am assuming the shot shocks caused this and I think potentially knocked some other things loose. The antenna fin may have become loose anf I beleive this caused the flood in the spare tire trunk compartment everytime it rained. The Windows gears are starting to malfunction, again. I had to replace the gas float in the gas tank under the back seats which now makes knowing when I am almost out of gas a problem. The cat is out or going out, I think is the problem as I have a weird compression that happens and makes a sputtering sound every time I fill up. I had to clean and replace the maf sensor as it use to have a hard time cranking. I think their is an electrical issue going on because last February my gauges all lit up and never went off (airbag, oil, traction and of course engine light). Mine has a bucket list of issues. Having worked on It so much, It is a love hate relationship. Oh and my a.c. belt just broke in November which I replaced but now the a.c. still is not working. The paint is and has been peeling for about 2 years and is starting to rust. But hey the one you are looking at may be swell!

Very good answer yes no way one of those engines would last 300,000 miles

Hi. First off thank you Scotty for helping me out. Just a quick follow up question : What’s the highest mileage that you have seen on those Mazdas?

They are OK they should last 150 maybe 200k miles but not much more the newer ones are better made.
