As you can see here,

https://carkiller.com/scottykilmer/qa/2000-toyota-celica-gt-with-100k/#

Those cars are known to fall apart engine wise, I would avoid putting hard earned money into it. Scotty said every single customer who owned one was at least on their 3rd engine, I doubt you would want to pay for those 3 engines. Get rid of it now!

4 5 grand worth of engine replacements? Wouldn't you rather use it as a good downpayment on your new ride?

Not really. The last generation Celica probably the worse made ones. Back when they were new, I test drove one, and even back then it was not as good as the 93-99 gen. You could throw what you want at it should you choose; wont' get hardly anything out of it afterwards.

here is oz car yards  have a PPRS certificate when they sell cars, that lets you know if its been written off and repaired, any major accidents, stolen or repo'd during the course of the vehicles existence. there is so such thing as a salvaged title in oz.

I would take my losses and get rid of it, especially it being a salvage title who knows what other issues you will encounter if you did try to restore it.  That was not the best generation of Celica either - not worth restoring.

I'd be curious if you could replace the engine with a regular non-GTS engine. You can probably research this issue on toyotanation.com, which I've found to be a very good source for non-routine Toy info.
