Timing belt broke, what now?

2002 P T Cruiser

I have a CHRY  PT Cruister and I was told that the timing belt is broken, they said it could have caused   more problem. So what can I do.. The miles are 167,000

Who are "they"? Did the engine stop running? It looks like that vehicle has the Chrysler 2.4 DOHC engine which is listed as a non-interference engine, with the caveat that valves may collide if the camshafts are out of time. So the engine may be OK, and at worst valves may need to be replaced.

So what can I do.

If the engine has not been damaged you can elect to replace the timing belt and go on your way. However if valves collided that would be a considerable additional expense to repair. (A quick internet search indicates that sometimes the valves are OK and sometimes not when the belt breaks.)

Also those are not very good long-term vehicles and that one has already exceeded its life expectancy at 22 years old. It would probably be better to put the money towards a better car if that's feasible.

Welcome new member.  Fortunately, I don’t think those are “interference” engines, so likely no major damage was done.  Any mechanic or experienced DIY’er can fix it. But some people advise replacing the water pump as long as you have it taken apart. 


Just be careful on change the water pump because they can fail alot
