Should I buy this Subaru Crosstrek?

Hi Scotty,

Big fan of your YouTube channel.  Here is what I got:

  • I am looking to buy a used 2020 Crosstrek with 100k miles (+CVT automatic) from a Subaru dealer in NJ/NY.
  • I test drove it and the engine sounded fine and there were no strange noises coming from suspensions
  • I felt the engine had a good acceleration, though I detected it to be slightly weaker than other Crosstreks with 80k to 90k miles
  • No leaks of any kind as far as I can see
  • Engine coolant smelled fine but there was a very, very small dab of what looked like a sludge (gray slime) under the engine oil filler cap
  • No rust
  • This car was purchased back in 2019 from the same Subaru dealer that is selling it now
  • Car fax shows that during 48 months of service, only 12 oil changes were done.  On three occasions, the owner went 20k+ miles (or around 8 to 9 months) before changing oil. I am aware that Carfax may not pick up oil changes from a local mechanic
  • Car did NOT have any 30k, 60k or 105k Subaru-recommended maintenance work
  • Service manager said that an oil sensor was replaced back in 2021 under warranty but no other work was done

The selling price + doc fee is $15k which I think is expensive for a car with 100k miles but Crosstreks seems to be very popular around here.

What do you think about the lack of engine oil changes and no maintenance work?  Should I not buy this car?

I am on a tight budget and I need a reliable car for my son to drive to school. I cannot afford to buy a money pit.

The lack of maintenance is concerning and per Scotty the CVTs on those (assuming it has automatic transmission) are typically only good for about 140K miles or so. (Chances are the fluid has never been changed in it.) I'd run away from that deal.
