2003 dodge Dakota overheating

Hi I have a 2003 dodge Dakota that has been overheating since our last major snow storm. Personally, I think it has something to do with the thermostat. While I was removing the ice and snow from the driveway and truck, I had the engine running with the intent to have heat blowing to melt the Ice.

I noticed after a good 20 minutes when I hopped in the truck to see if it was warm yet, (which it should’ve been) the air was ice cold and the engine was overheating. Anyone know what the issue is? Is it a stuck shut thermostat? And if so what can I do to fix it?

Yes, it sounds like the thermostat didn't open. Replace it and have your cooling system flushed. I suspect it hasn't been properly serviced in a long time.

Very possible. I haven’t owned the truck it’s entire life, I’ve only put like 10k miles on it within the past year.

Best idea is to have all the other fluids & filters freshened up as well. Oil, transmission, power steering, rear differential & brake fluid. No flushes except the brakes, just drain and refills. People tend to neglect those very important things. Good luck.

Start with a new thermostat and radiator cap like @Old Guys Rule said.

did you clear the snow off the cowl first?
